Bistort (Persicaria bistorta) 

Bistort is a vigorous clump forming herbaceous perennial with finely pointed ovate leaves and dense spikes of light pink flowers. Makes good weed-suppressing groundcover. 

Growing conditions: Happy in sun or part shade and prefers moist soil so good for a bog garden or near a pond. 

Wildlife value: Loved by bees and butterflies

Edible: Yes. Also known as ‘Pudding Dock’ in the North as the young leaves can be cooked and eaten in Yorkshire traditionally around Easter time. Leaves are best eaten young and can be eaten raw. They taste mild and a bit like spinach.
