Plant profile: Perennial Kale ‘Taunton Deane’

Taunton Deane is an old variety of perennial kale that lives for many years and supplies tasty greens all year round.

Height and spread: It can grow to over 2m tall and if you cut off the lower branches and support with a stake can be grown to look like a small tree. Crown lifting like this allows light and space underneath for underplanting.

Growing conditions: Fairly fertile soil in sun or part shade.

Pest and Disease: Generally withstands pest and disease, it can get nibbled by caterpillars but that’s all part of the food web and a healthy garden ecosystem.

Cooking and eating: The leaves look tough but when cooked are sweet, tender and nutritious.
